| From
the metropolis of Glasgow to
the sublime of North Berwick and St
Andrews, and from Stirling
and the Wallace monument in the foothills of the
lower highlands, to the wistful magic of the
Hebrides. Come on a tour of Scotland
or just revive memories by clicking the thumbnail images to enlarge. The fishing villages and towns along the Fife
coastline, from Culross to St Andrews are favourite subjects.
I love to try and capture the light and feeling of space that is
characteristic, particularly of east Fife and places such as Elie
and St Monans of Fife, they
say, gets more sunlight than any other part of the country.
From my own experience, a summer afternoon spent exploring Pittenweem
with its array of white-washed houses set against an azure sea,
you could easily imagine for a moment, that you were in Spain.
Indeed you could say the wide-open fields stretching to the coast
with its villages dotted along are reminiscent of Cornwall
(an analogy that Fifers may not wish to share!). but the truth is,
Fife has a character all of its own.

I
have painted Anstruther (or
Ainster as it’s known locally) with its busy harbour many
times. Anstruther was once a capital of the herring industry and very
important in the fishing industry. The town also has a colourful,
if shady past, when in the C16th and C17th wine and tobacco were smuggled
into the town via the Dreel Burn.
Other paintings and prints are of St
Andrews from the west sands and of the ‘old course’
and Swilcan Bridge. Edinburgh
is always featured with places of interest like Edinburgh
castle and the closes along the Royal
Mile, to suburbs such as Stockbridge
and the interesting Port of Leith.
Also featured are views of Cramond,
South Queensferry and the Forth
Rail Bridge. Soon to be added are: Perth, Glasgow and Stirling
prints.
The rest of my work is varied in style and subject with contemporary,
portrait and figure painting
in pastels and some abstract painting
in oils and acrylics. It’s best for you to see them for yourself
rather than for me to try and explain them.
Enjoy!
